GET Bus and Amtrak's San Joaquin trains win November-December Velo Hero Award
Hooray for Golden Empire Transit and for Amtrak's San Joaquin trains.

Both agencies provide easy-to-use bicycle racks so people can take their bicycles with them when they travel. This intermodal transit (combining different modes or types of transit) is the answer to many of our community and nation's most pressing transportation needs.

The Amtrak San Joaquin train bike racks hold bicycles securely. Bikes stand on their rear wheel and a neat device locks down the front wheel while bungee straps hold the rear part of the bike.

Amtrak's San Joaquin trains have room for 3 bicycles in the lower part of each passenger car. It's easy to roll your bike on. And if you haven't used the racks before, the train attendants will help you.

Every local GET bus has a bike rack on the front that holds 2 bikes. And if it's full they'll let you bring your bike on board if there's room.

Not only is this good for bicyclists, it's also good for the environment and for health. It reduces single-occupancy car commutes, a major source of pollution. And it provides an easy way to exercise while getting around efficiently at the same time.

Combine a bike with public transit and you can get almost anywhere you need to go - quickly, easily and inexpensively.

October 2001

City wins First Velo Hero Award!
The October Velo Hero Award goes to the city of Bakersfied, specifically, to our traffic engineers and workers, who have begun increasing the time that signals stay green at major intersections.

Our thanks to Bruce Deeter, Ryan Starbuck, Steve Walker and others in the traffic engineering department who listened to our concersn and helped us make this happen. Thanks also to Bailey Abbott for working one-on-one with Bruce to field-test several intersections.

The first 10 intersections identified by the coalition have already been fixed (click here for a list). Eventually, all intersections in town will be changed in three-phase plan.

This is a huge step forward for bicyclist's safety and convenience. Whether you're a bicyclist or a motorist, most accidents occur at intersections, so increasing the safety at these locations is enormously helpful.

To nominate someone as a Velo Hero, simply e-mail John Lotze and let him know all the details. We'll check it out, and if it's truly good for bicyclists, we'll post it on our site for a month.
