Intersections with short signal timing

Intersections where sensors do not detect bicyclists

Other Intersections and Road Locations which pose hazards to Bicyclists

The following intersections in Bakersfield do not currently allow enough time for an average bicyclist to clear the intersection before the light turns red.

Update: City is fixing this problem, beginning with intersections listed here. See our home page for full details!

If a car is present behind bicyclists, the car will sometimes keep the sensors tripped long enough for the bicyclist to get through. However, if no cars are present behind the bicyclist, the light will change to red again too quickly for the average bicyclist to clear the intersection.

Additional intersections and road locations with miscellaneous problems

• Haggin Oaks Blvd at Camino Media (a T intersection)
Problem: bicyclists and pedestrians crossing Camino Media on the west side of Haggin Oaks, exiting or entering the Cal State bike path, get a green walk signal at the same time as the Left-Turn-Only traffic northbound on Haggin Oaks gets a green to turn on to Camino Media westbound. This is an extreme hazard for both bicyclists and pedestrians. This signal should be changed so that the northbound Haggin Oaks Blvd LTO traffic gets a red while the peds and cyclists proceed on a straight through green.

• Camino Media crosswalk westbound crossing Haggin Oaks Blvd.
Problem: The pedestrian signal stays red and never provides a walk signal.

• Chester Avenue northbound at Brundage Lane.
Problem: The pedestrian signal light for northbound pedestrians on the east side of Chester crossing Brundage NEVER turns green. It stays red even when the ped button is pushed. FIXED!

• Chester Ave southbound underpass just south of 34th street.
Problem: parallel drainage grate just waiting for a bicyclists front wheel to fall into it. Same problem may also exist on northbound side. Not verified yet.

We know ther are more intersections with poor signal timing, as well as many intersections and other road locations with other problems (such as sensors that don't detect bicyclists). We are still collecting data from bicyclists throughout Bakersfield. If you know of a signal that turns red too soon or that doesn't detect you, or an intesrsection or road hazard that poses other problems for you, e-mail us!
